Who it's for

For anyone who will take a lead, whatever their job title.

The course explores mental health risk, complex situations, workplace support and recovery, psychological safety and the part leadership at every level plays in creating a healthier workplace culture.

Learners develop the confidence to respond appropriately while understanding boundaries, escalation and organisational responsibility.

Anyone can take this level. What matters is the part someone will play in how your organisation responds, not how senior they are.

Course content

Three learning outcomes. Twelve leadership capabilities.

Level 6 asks more of learners than the levels below it: not just what to do, but why, on whose authority and where the limits of the role sit.

LO1

Legal, ethical and organisational responsibility

1.1Employer duties for psychological wellbeing, and reducing workplace risk to mental health
1.2Disability, reasonable adjustments and equality law in practice
1.3Acting on your legal, ethical and organisational responsibilities in a live situation
1.4How policy and procedure support leaders to meet regulatory requirements
LO2

Complex conditions, risk and workplace support

2.1Common and complex conditions, and how the same diagnosis affects people differently
2.2Reading patterns over time, and judging when to act rather than keep monitoring
2.3Supportive conversations, workplace adjustments and supporting recovery
2.4Risk, confidentiality and escalation, and the boundaries of the leadership role
LO3

Stigma, psychological safety and culture

3.1The impact of stigma on the individual, the team and organisational culture
3.2Challenging stigmatising language in the moment, without shutting the conversation down
3.3Building a psychologically safe, inclusive and mentally healthy environment
3.4Modelling healthy practice and encouraging people to raise concerns early

Tested against the situations leaders actually dread

Learners work through a case study of a senior manager supporting an employee who discloses self-harm and asks for it to be kept confidential: what to do, how to hold the conversation, what adjustments to consider, where the boundaries of the role sit and why a disclosure like that changes the decision. It is the difference between having a policy and knowing what to do at four o'clock on a Friday.

Why this level

Depth, not just more hours.

Building on Levels 4 and 5, this course covers a significantly wider range of mental health conditions, including complex, less common but high-impact presentations that people trained at lower levels may encounter but won't be prepared for.

Learners also gain a detailed understanding of the therapies and professional support a person might receive during treatment, so they can provide genuinely informed guidance rather than generic signposting.

It includes an explicit focus on the organisational infrastructure question, because putting people in a supporting role without the right structures around them sets everyone up to fail.

Questions

Level 3 mental health first aid: your questions answered.

Is this a Level 3 mental health first aid qualification?

Yes. Level 3 Advanced Leadership in Workplace Mental Health is credit rated and recognised by Qualifications Scotland, with levels that are equivalent to the RQF in England. Because delegates are assessed, their certificate shows they achieved the standard, not just that they attended.

How are delegates assessed?

Through role play scenarios, where they practise a real supportive conversation; case studies, where they work through a scenario and explain their thinking; and a multiple choice and short answer assessment.

Who should take Level 3?

Anyone who will take a lead in how your organisation responds to mental health, whatever their job title. Some people move up from Level 2, and some organisations start here.

What does Level 3 cover that Level 2 does not?

It goes further into complex conditions, suicide prevention, crisis response and the organisational structures that make first aid work in practice.

How long is the course?

Two full days of interactive training.

Can it be done online?

Yes. It can be delivered fully online or fully in person. We do not mix the two, with some people in the room and others on screen, because neither group gets the experience they need. See online mental health first aid training.

How much does it cost?

The price covers the whole group, not each person: £2,495 for up to 12 people or £2,995 for up to 16. All prices include VAT. See our guide to mental health first aid training costs for what should be included.

How long does the certificate last?

Three years. We strongly recommend a short refresher every year so the skills stay fresh, and we can run refresher training for your first aiders.

Is there a minimum age?

Delegates need to be 14 or over.

Do you run this training for construction and engineering teams?

Yes. We have a pathway built for construction, engineering and energy, delivered on site and shaped around shifts, safety critical work and life on site. See mental health first aid for construction.

Where this sits in the bigger picture.
