Does Hypnotherapy Work for Anxiety?

Anxiety rules lives. Take it from someone who knows, anxiety has the ability to impact every aspect of your life. But you already know how exhausting that is, don’t you? You wouldn’t be here otherwise.

Chances are, if you already know how debilitating anxiety can be, you’ve also tried every trick in the book to get rid of your anxiety forever. From breathing into a brown paper bag to sacrificing a large cabbage to the anxiety Gods, when you’re suffering from anxiety, you’d do anything to bid your mental illness ‘farewell’.

Does Hypnotherapy Work For Anxiety?

Simply put, yes, yes it does.

If you’re suffering from anxiety or anxiety related conditions such as PTSD, OCD or phobias, the great news is that clinical hypnotherapy can help you get rid of your anxiety for good. I hear you though, there are all sorts of treatments out there – what makes hypnotherapy so special? As someone who was a patient before I became a Clinical Hypnotherapist, here are my top five reasons that hypnotherapy is the king of all anxiety treatments…

  • Hypnotherapy does more than scratch the surface

Hypnotherapy helps to resolve the underlying cause of the problem. Unlike other treatments *cough cough* antidepressants *cough cough*, clinical hypnotherapy doesn’t just ease the symptoms of anxiety, it gets down with the true cause and stops your anxiety in its tracks. No longer will you find yourself sweeping your mental health condition under the rug with a prescription for medication, instead you’ll take control of your life (even throwing that tatty, old rug out if that’s what you truly want!).

  • Hypnotherapy is tailored to you

When was the last time you had a treatment plan tailored specifically to you? When you go to your GP for anxiety treatment, the typical antidepressants that are tried first *cough cough* Sertraline and Escitalopram *cough cough* don’t require a lot of tailoring. You’ll be given a low dose initially and increase if/when needed until you reach the maximum dose, occasionally mixing more than one drug… That’s as bespoke as it gets. During a consultation, I will assess your subconscious level and look for any beliefs that might be underpinning your anxieties. Now, unless you’re sharing your brain with someone, you’re not going to find a treatment plan more unique!

  • Hypnotherapy resets rather than replaces

With typical talking therapies *cough cough* cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) *cough cough*, you are taught to live with your anxiety, managing the symptoms as and when they arise. This is where clinical hypnotherapy shines – your brain won’t be learning how to replace your body’s natural behaviours with thoughts of rainbows and bunnies, you’ll simply be pressing ‘reset’ to a time before your anxiety began. Not only is this a quick process, but it’s much more effective than trying to retrain your brain – you’re just reminding it of what it already knows!

  • Hypnotherapy allows you to remain yourself

In the wise words of Dr Suess, “there is no one alive who is youer than you”. And judging by his books, Dr Suess probably knows all about using chemical substances to alter your thought processes^.

Whilst some medications *cough cough* benzodiazepines *cough cough*, ease your anxiety symptoms, they can also erase any signs of personality. Personally, I was left feeling numb and lifeless. Hypnotherapy rewinds your thoughts and behaviours to a time that you felt your best, giving you the boost you need to live your life.

  • Hypnotherapy has no side effects

Many moons ago, “doctors” used to drill holes in the skulls of those suffering from what we now know to be mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. Whilst we’ve come a long way from that, treatments offered as standard still have a host of side effects that most of us could live without *cough cough* antidepressants can cause erectile dysfunction *cough cough*. Thankfully for me and my thousands of clients, hypnotherapy causes no unwanted side effects.

WARNING: Hypnotherapy may cause improved mood; better sleep; a refreshed enthusiasm for life.
