How long does it take to become a hypnotherapist? It is one of the first questions people ask me, so here is the short answer first.
- Foundation Diploma: around six to seven months in total, with the teaching over four weekends.
- Full Diploma: nine months of training, and most people finish in about eleven.
The number on its own does not tell you much, though. Here is what that time actually looks like.
This article is part of our Complete Guide to Hypnotherapy Training in the UK.
The Foundation Diploma: four weekends over four months
The Foundation Diploma is four weekends, spread over four months. They are not back to back. There is a gap between each one, and that gap matters.
That is where you go away and practise. On friends, on family, on anyone patient enough to let you. So while the teaching is four weekends, most people take six or seven months before they feel settled with it. That is fine. That is how it should be.

The full Diploma: nine months, closer to eleven
The full Diploma runs over nine months. In practice, most people take nearer eleven, because the Diploma asks more of you:
- Three case studies, where you work with real clients and write up what you did and why.
- An open book exam.
- A practical assessment, where you show you can actually do it.
The extra time is not padding. It is the part that turns knowing about hypnotherapy into being able to sit with a client and help them.
Does training online take longer?
No. The Diploma can be attended live online, in real time. Same weekends, same teaching, same qualification, so the timescale is the same either way.
When could you start seeing clients?
I encourage students to start building their practice around month six or seven. Not seeing a full diary of clients, but thinking about it properly.
- Who do you want to help?
- What will you call yourself?
- Which days will you work?
- How many clients a week would feel right?
That way, when you finish, you are not starting from nothing. You have already been laying the foundations. I have written more about that in Can You Make a Living as a Hypnotherapist?

Why there is no shortcut
You will see courses that promise to make you a hypnotherapist in a weekend, or in a few days.
Anyone who is open minded and willing can learn to create hypnosis. That part is fairly easy. The real skill is knowing what to do with it when a real person is sitting in front of you, anxious, and hoping you can help.
That takes time, practice and someone watching you and correcting you as you go. Around a quarter of the students I train have trained somewhere else first, and they come to us because they did not feel ready to work with clients.
So how long does it take? Long enough to be good at it. For most people that is somewhere between six months and a year, depending on which route you take.
If you are weighing up the two routes, I go through them side by side in Foundation Diploma or Diploma in Hypnotherapy?, and you can see the costs in How Much Does Hypnotherapy Training Cost?
