1. Introduction:
It may have crossed your mind once, or more, to become a hypnotherapist. And along with that thought probably came hundreds of other questions. Am I cut out to be a hypnotherapist? Will people take me seriously? Do I have what it takes to thrive in this business? How long does it take to get qualified?
We’ll answer these questions, along with everything else you need to know about hypnotherapy training in the UK, and a hypnotherapist’s career progression. Whether you’re a therapist looking to expand your skills, someone newly interested in the career, or just curious, there’s something here for you.
Let’s start by recapping what hypnotherapists actually do.
2. What Does a Hypnotherapist Actually Do?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses guided hypnosis to help a client reach a trance-like state. When they’re in this state, a hypnotherapist gets a client to reach, heightened focus and attention, diminished peripheral awareness, and even heightened suggestibility. This makes the client more receptive to a hypnotherapist’s ideas that can support change.
What are clients usually looking to change?
Well, in many cases, hypnotherapy is done to help manage pain, emotional distress like anxiety or trauma, or to bring about behavioral shifts.
Here’s how:
According to something called neodissociation theory, our minds have a central control system (think of it as the executive ego) and several sub-systems that handle different types of thoughts, sensations, and reactions. When someone is hypnotized, these systems in the brain begin to function differently.
The body’s central control can momentarily step aside, allowing some of these sub-systems to operate independently. This is why a person might say, “I felt the pain, but it didn’t bother me,” or even, “The pain wasn’t there.” Because the part of the brain that typically processes and reacts to pain has essentially been tuned out.
In fact, studies show that clinical hypnosis can help people separate the sensory part of pain (the physical feeling) from the emotional part (the suffering). And that’s quite powerful, especially when traditional treatments fall short.
People turn to hypnotherapy for all sorts of reasons—sometimes as a last resort, other times alongside their regular treatment. And why not? Hypnotherapy can add strength to what they’re already doing, and in many cases, create breakthroughs that weren’t happening before.
So, if you asked us again, what do hypnotherapists actually do?
Here at Piece of Mind UK, we’re essentially training hypnotherapists to
- guide.
- listen.
- help clients bypass the noise of the conscious mind so real shifts can begin—whether that’s in behavior, emotion, pain, or even identity.
Our trained hypnotherapists don’t do the work for the client.
They help the client find the part of them that already knows how to heal.
3. What Skills and Qualities Do You Need?
The skills you need as a hypnotherapist are a bit more intricate than what you might expect.
Yes, at the top of the list, you’re learning how to hypnotise people. What you need to know to hypnotise people would include:
- Learning how to induce different types of trance states
- Understanding how to pace and lead the client’s experience
- Using both direct and indirect suggestions effectively
- Reading non-verbal cues to gauge depth of trance
- Managing resistance and tailoring suggestions accordingly
- Practicing ethical and responsible use of hypnotic techniques
- Knowing when and how to deepen or lighten the trance
- Timing post-hypnotic suggestions for maximum impact
But more importantly, you’ll learn the skills to detect the real issues.
Most of a hypnotherapist’s clients come to get rid of that one thing. It could be a weight loss problem, wanting to overcome anxiety, or healing from past trauma.
But we at Piece of Mind UK have found that, in many cases, what they think is the problem… isn’t actually the problem.
For example, a client might come in and say they’re having trouble eating, maybe they’ve lost their appetite. On the surface, that’s the issue. But when you start digging, you often find it’s not really about the food at all.
It’s anxiety.
Or loneliness.
Or a sense of not being in control of their life.
And that’s the real skill of hypnotherapy, not just guiding someone into trance, but gently peeling back the layers of the story they’ve told themselves.
But we’ve also found that it’s not always the case. Every client is different.
As for qualities, you’ve got to be genuinely interested in human development and potential.
As a hypnotherapist, you’re getting people from a place of feeling stuck… to seeing their ability to move forward.
Helping them do this requires:
- Great listening
- Empathy
- Communication
- Curiosity
- Patience
So, in short, to become a hypnotherapist you need a blend of solid technical training and the right soft skills.
4. How Do You Become a Hypnotherapist?
With a simple Google search on how to become a hypnotherapist, you’ll probably get hundreds of search results from different providers offering training courses.
However, with hypnotherapy not being a regulated career in the UK, it’s easy to come across training providers that don’t exactly give you everything you need.
At Piece of Mind UK, we’re accredited.
We work in collaboration with the Manchester College of Coaching and are validated by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC).
This means your qualification from us will be recognised nationally.
So, how do you begin with getting your qualification?
You need to enrol in a course from an accredited provider. Our courses are structured in two progressive stages:
Certificate Course
This is the first course.
The course teaches transformative hypnosis skills and provides insights into how the human mind works.
After completing this course, you can actually start seeing clients.
Diploma Course
Once you’ve completed the Certificate Course, you can take your knowledge a step further by enrolling in the Diploma Course.
This program is ideal for students committed to advancing their hypnotherapy skills , and who see a future in this field, whether part-time or full-time.
For more information on exactly what these courses offer, as well as answers to FAQs, please visit our Hypnotherapy Training page.
What are the prerequisites to entering the course?
You just need to have a real passion — or even just a deep intrigue — for therapy.
You don’t need an academic background or a degree in psychology.
Although… it will probably be advantageous.
Why? Because you’re learning to work with the mind — how it processes, stores, and reacts to experience.
So, having some foundational knowledge in areas like psychology, human behaviour, or even counselling can give you a bit of a head start.
That said, don’t let that intimidate you.
Absolutely anyone can do this.
Whether you’re coming from a corporate job, a creative field, a wellness background, or you’ve never studied anything remotely related before…
If you’re curious, open, and willing to learn, then you’ll absolutely enjoy this course.
5. Hypnotherapy Courses: What Are Your Options?
- Types of Courses
The type of course really depends on the provider and what they’ve set up as a suitable way of teaching hypnotherapy.
At Piece of Mind, we’ve designed hybrid learning training courses that blend in-person sessions, dedicated to hands-on skill-building, with online sessions to offer flexibility, especially for busy people.
We explain more about our courses and schedules in the next section.
- Regulation: What to Watch For
At the moment, hypnotherapy in the UK has no formal regulation.
This means anyone can call themselves a qualified practitioner, or set up a training school and claim they’re able to teach. In fact, anyone can even call themselves a regulator.
The regulation issues in the UK largely stem from the fact that hypnotherapy is difficult to place within traditional medical establishments.
That said, the British Medical Association does see hypnotherapy as valid — but as a complementary treatment, not an alternative to medical care.
Because it isn’t formally regulated, it’s best to find practitioners or schools that are accredited by a professional body in the UK.
- Accreditation and professional bodies in the UK
Accreditation matters when looking for places to train or professionals to consult. They’d typically be accredited by one of these bodies.
GHSC – The General Hypnotherapy Standards Council
GHSC and GHR are together the most prominent organisations within hypnotherapy in the UK.
GHR – General Hypnotherapy Register
One of the largest registers in the UK, recognised by insurers and training schools.
CNHC – Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council
A government-backed register; NHS employers often refer to CNHC for complementary practitioners.
ACCPH – Accredited Counsellors, Coaches, Psychotherapists and Hypnotherapists
Covers a broad range of talking therapies, with recognised standards and ongoing CPD support.
BSCH – British Society of Clinical Hypnosis
Focuses on clinical hypnotherapy. Membership typically requires a high standard of training and practice.
NRHP – National Register of Hypnotherapists & Psychotherapists
A dual-register body for those trained in both hypnotherapy and psychotherapy.
HS – Hypnotherapy Society
One of the oldest UK societies for hypnotherapy practitioners, focused on ethical practice.
UKCP – UK Council for Psychotherapy (includes hypnotherapists with psychotherapy backgrounds)
Very rigorous standards; often requires psychotherapy-level training alongside hypnotherapy.
NCH – National Council for Hypnotherapy
Highly recognised; supports therapists with accreditation, CPD, and public visibility.
6. Hypnotherapy Training UK: Online vs. In-Person
Life can get busy – we absolutely get it. That’s why Piece of Mind UK offers blended online and in-person hypnotherapy training.
Pros and Cons of Online Learning
Pros

- Comfort – Study in your own space, with your favourite cup of tea in hand.
- Replay Value – Sessions are recorded, so you can revisit topics as many times as you need.
- Less Travel Stress – No commuting, no parking, no hassle.
Cons
- Less Face-to-Face Connection – While we work hard to build community online, nothing quite beats the vibe of in-person energy.
- Self-Discipline Required – You’ll need to keep yourself accountable and motivated.
- Tech Hiccups – Internet issues or screen fatigue can sometimes slow things down.
Pros and Cons of In-Person Training (Glasgow City Centre)
Pros
- Immersive Experience – Being in the room lets you feel the energy, practice live, and really soak it all in.
- Immediate Feedback – Practice techniques with real people, and get instant insights from your trainer.
- Build Relationships – Meet like-minded people, network, and make deep connections.
- Step Into the Role – Being in a professional environment can help you start embodying the hypnotherapist you’re becoming.
Cons
- Travel Time – If you’re not local to Glasgow, you’ll need to factor in transport and accommodation.
- Fixed Schedule – Sessions are live and set, which may not work for everyone’s availability.
- Energy Drain – Learning in person can be really rewarding, but also tiring.
By blending both in-person and online offerings, you get to enhance those skills that really can only be done in person, but also never miss out when life gets busy.

7. Career Path and Progression in Hypnotherapy
It’s great to already start thinking about your career as a hypnotherapist once you’ve qualified. After getting your qualifications, you’re probably going to want to look for a place where you can start practicing, whether that’s finding a job or starting your own practice.
Seeking Employment
Hypnotherapy isn’t typically offered as a full-time position within the NHS or most public health systems in the UK. However, some private clinics, wellness centres, or multidisciplinary therapy practices do hire hypnotherapists on a freelance, sessional, or part-time basis.
There are also opportunities to partner with GPs, psychologists, or holistic practitioners, especially if you have a specialism (e.g. pain management, anxiety, smoking cessation, or fertility).
Some hypnotherapists are even brought into corporate wellbeing programmes or schools for mindset coaching, confidence building, and stress reduction workshops.
Becoming Self-Employed
The majority of UK hypnotherapists set up private practices, either from home, online, or by renting therapy rooms, and tend to do really well going this route.
Take the story of the founder of Piece of Mind UK, Andy Griffiths, how he started his hypnotherapy practice in his back bedroom and turned it into a six-figure income business, helping change the lives of hundreds of people.
Many practitioners build flexible, fulfilling careers by combining hypnotherapy with other skills, like coaching, counselling, NLP, massage therapy, or nutrition.
