Mental Health First Aid: Why Every Workplace in Scotland Should Prioritise It

Mental Health First Aid:
Why Every Workplace in Scotland Should Prioritise It

Mental health first aid Scotland

In today’s fast-paced work environment, stress, anxiety, and mental health challenges are increasingly prevalent. For businesses in Scotland, mental health first aid (MHFA) training is crucial in fostering a supportive culture, improving employee well-being, and even enhancing productivity.

But why exactly should workplaces prioritise mental health first aid? Here’s a deeper look into why MHFA should be at the forefront of workplace health strategies.

1. The Mental Health Crisis in Scotland

Mental health issues aren’t just individual challenges — they significantly impact the workforce. According to a 2020 Public Health Scotland report, nearly one in four adults experiences anxiety or depression. For businesses, this manifests as absenteeism, presenteeism, and a decline in employee engagement. This creates a domino effect, where stress and burnout lead to reduced performance and increased turnover rates.

By offering MHFA training, businesses can take proactive steps in recognising early signs of distress, providing support, and fostering a healthier work environment. This can help mitigate the impact of mental health issues and improve overall staff retention.

2. Mental Health First Aid vs. Physical First Aid

While physical first aid is a well-established requirement in the workplace, mental health first aid is only now beginning to gain the recognition it deserves. Mental health first aiders are trained to identify the signs of mental health distress and provide initial support until professional help can be accessed. Whether it’s listening empathetically, offering reassurance, or guiding someone toward mental health resources, Mental Health First Aiders are the first line of defence when mental health challenges arise.

This is not just about ticking a box for compliance; it’s about building a workplace where employees feel supported, safe, and empowered to seek help.

3. Building a Stronger Workplace Culture

Workplace culture can make or break a business. Employees want to work in environments where they feel valued, understood, and supported — and mental health first aid training is a key driver of this. A mentally healthy workplace culture not only reduces the stigma around mental health but also encourages open communication.

For example, a company in Aberdeen that integrated MHFA training across all departments saw a notable increase in employee morale and a reduction in mental health-related absences by over 25%. Employees reported feeling more supported, resulting in increased loyalty and overall job satisfaction.

4. The ROI of Mental Health Training

One question business owners often ask is, “What’s the return on investment (ROI) for mental health training?” The answer is clear: MHFA training saves businesses money in the long run. Research shows that for every £1 spent on mental health interventions, businesses see a return of £5 in reduced absenteeism, presenteeism, and staff turnover.

With mental health issues accounting for a significant portion of employee absences, addressing them head-on through MHFA training is a smart investment for businesses of all sizes.

5. Real-Life Success Stories in Scotland

To highlight the importance of MHFA training, let’s look at a real-life example. A mid-sized tech firm in Edinburgh decided to make MHFA a core part of their wellness strategy. After implementing the training, the company saw a 30% reduction in absenteeism due to mental health issues within the first year. Moreover, employee surveys showed that staff felt more supported and were more likely to recommend the company to potential hires.

This company’s HR director said: “Our employees feel more valued, and we’ve seen a noticeable improvement in morale and productivity. Mental health first aid training has been a game-changer for us.”

Training & Development

Tagline: He’s seen mental health crisis at its most acute. And he knows what actually helps.

David’s background is probably unlike anyone else you’ll meet in a mental health training room.

Twenty-three years on the frontline of emergency services first as a police officer, now as an HCPC-registered practising paramedic. He hasn’t studied stress, trauma and burnout from a distance. He’s carried them, in uniform, responding to people at the absolute worst moments of their lives. He understands the culture that makes asking for help feel like the hardest thing in the world because he’s lived inside that culture.

That frontline experience sits alongside his clinical practice as a qualified hypnotherapist and accredited EFT practitioner. David works with real people navigating real challenges every single week. What he brings to Piece of Mind Training isn’t theoretical. It’s current, grounded and built entirely from the inside out.

As part of the team, David delivers training, practises as a therapist and plays a key role in the development and direction of the organisation making sure that everything Piece of Mind produces is professionally rigorous and genuinely human.

David is responsible for development and ensures that Piece of Mind Training programmes are grounded in real-world application. Not what the textbook says should happen. What actually works when it matters.

Ann Stewart

Head of Training

Tagline: The person who makes sure the learning delivers every time.

Ann has spent her career helping people make sense of the things that are weighing on them and finding a way forward when everything feels tough.

Her background is genuinely rare. A qualified teacher, certified hypnotherapist, coach and First Aid for Mental Health practitioner, Ann brings together an understanding of how people learn with a deep, practical knowledge of how people struggle. She still works directly with adults and young people every week supporting those experiencing anxiety, low confidence, emotional distress and the kind of quiet difficulties that don’t always have a name but make everyday life feel impossibly hard.

As a trainer, Ann knows that the best mental health training doesn’t just inform people, it changes how they see themselves and the people around them. She brings that belief into every session she delivers, whether she’s working with a room full of HR professionals or a team who’ve never talked about mental health at work before.

As a therapist, trainer, teacher and mum of three, Ann understands that most people are dealing with far more than anyone around them realises. That understanding is the foundation of everything she does.

At Piece of Mind Training, Ann leads on training quality and consistency, making sure that what we promise is what every learner experiences, every time.
