One of the questions I’m asked most is whether it’s better to train as a hypnotherapist in a classroom or online.
The trouble is that “online” can mean two very different things. When I’ve warned people that online courses lack real practice, I’ve always meant self paced distance learning, where you watch recordings on your own. Live online training is a different thing altogether. So the real choice isn’t between a room and a screen. It’s between learning with people in real time and learning on your own from recordings.
Here’s an honest look at the options, what each one gives you, and how to work out which suits you.
There are three ways to train, not two
- In the classroomYou travel to a training centre for the weekends and practise face to face with other students and your tutor.
- Live onlineYou join a real classroom in real time over Zoom. You take part, ask questions and practise as it happens.
- Self paced distance learningYou work through recorded videos and reading on your own, whenever suits you. There is no live class.
People often lump the last two together as “online training”. They’re very different, and it’s worth knowing which one a course actually is before you book.
The real difference is live or recorded
Hypnotherapy is a practical skill. You can read about it, and you should, but you get good at it by doing it. Would you learn to drive a car by reading a book?
To become a hypnotherapist who can genuinely help people, you need three things:
- Plenty of practice with other people, not just theory
- Someone experienced watching you and correcting you as you go
- The chance to ask questions at the moment they come up
A good classroom gives you all three. So does a good live online class. A recorded course, on its own, can’t give you the second or the third.

Knowing how to create hypnosis is the easy part. Knowing what to do with it is the real skill.
What classroom training gives you
There’s something about being in the room. You pick up the small things: how someone’s breathing changes, how a voice and pace land, how a person responds when you adjust what you’re doing. You practise face to face, with your tutor beside you, and you get to know the people you’re training with.

Our classroom is at our own training centre at Orchard Park in Carmyle, just outside Glasgow city centre and easy to reach by car, train or bus. There’s local accommodation nearby if you’re travelling in for the weekends.
The trade off is travel. If you live a long way away, or juggle work and family, getting to a training centre every month can be a lot to ask.
What live online training gives you
Live online removes the travel without losing the live classroom. On our course, online students join the same weekends as the classroom students, in real time. You take part, ask questions and practise as it happens, and I watch, guide and correct you just as I would in the room.

You also gain exactly the same qualification. Your certificate simply notes that you attended online.
It does ask a few things of you:
- A quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted for the day
- A reliable internet connection, with your camera on
- Some energy. A full day on screen can be more tiring than a day in a room, so plan your breaks
Where self paced distance learning fits
Self paced learning has its place. It’s a good way to find out whether hypnotherapy interests you, to learn the theory, or to keep learning between live training.
What it can’t do is watch you work. Nobody is there to notice what you’re doing well, or what to change. On its own, it’s unlikely to leave you feeling ready to sit with a client. If you start with distance learning and enjoy it, the next step is live training.
How to choose
A few honest questions usually settle it:
- How do you learn best? If you come alive in a room with other people, the classroom is worth the journey.
- How far away are you? If the travel would make it hard to attend every weekend, live online keeps you in the same class without it.
- Do you have a quiet space at home? Live online works best when you can shut the door and give it your full attention.
- What do you want at the end? If you want to work with clients, choose live training, in the room or online. If you are simply curious, self paced learning is a gentle place to start.
If you’re still unsure, that’s normal. It’s exactly the kind of thing we can talk through on a call.
How our training works
Our hypnotherapy training runs as one continuous course, taught in Glasgow and live online at the same time. You can start with the Foundation Diploma, which is the first four weekends, or go straight into the full nine month Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy. The next intake starts on Saturday 27 February 2027.

The full Diploma is accredited by the GHSC. You can read more about what that means in our article on accreditation, and about which course to start with in Foundation Diploma or full Diploma.
Questions people ask about classroom and online training
Is online hypnotherapy training as good as classroom training?
Live online training can be, as long as you practise in real time with a tutor watching and correcting you. Self paced courses made of recorded videos cannot give you that, so they are better for learning the theory than for building the skill.
Do you get the same qualification if you train online?
On our course, yes. Online students join the same live classroom on the same weekends and gain exactly the same qualification. The only difference is that the certificate notes that you attended online.
Is live online training the same as distance learning?
No. Live online training happens in real time, over Zoom, with a tutor and other students. Distance learning is self paced: you work through recorded material on your own, in your own time.
Can you learn hypnotherapy without practising on people?
You can learn a great deal of the theory, but not the skill itself. Hypnotherapy is something you get good at by doing it, with someone experienced watching and helping you adjust, before you work with paying clients.
