How Much Does Hypnotherapy Cost in Glasgow?

If you’re thinking about hypnotherapy, the cost is usually one of the first things you want to know. So here’s a straight answer, along with what affects the price and what to check before you book with anyone, me included.

The short answer

Hypnotherapy sessions with me start from £70 each. Most people I work with come for between two and four sessions, so the total is usually somewhere between £140 and £280.

Before you book anything, there’s a free 20 minute consultation, so we can both check that hypnotherapy is the right fit for you.

What a session with me costs

  • Sessions start from £70 and last around an hour.
  • The price is the same whether you come to see me at Orchard Park in Carmyle or we work online over Zoom.
  • It’s also the same whichever approach we use in the session, whether that’s hypnotherapy, EMDR, NLP or something else.
  • You pay as you go, one session at a time. I don’t sell packages or ask you to pay for a block of sessions up front.
  • If you book online, you pay a £20 deposit to hold your appointment.
  • The first conversation is free. It’s a 20 minute consultation, in person, by phone or on Zoom, with no obligation to book anything afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Most of the people I work with see me for between two and four sessions. Some need fewer. Some need more. It depends on what you’re struggling with, how long it’s been going on and what else is happening in your life.

I don’t believe in keeping people in therapy longer than they need to be. A lot of what brings people to me, like anxiety, panic or a phobia, is an automatic response rather than something they’re choosing. Hypnotherapy works with that response directly, rather than talking around it for months. At the end of each session we talk honestly about whether another one is needed.

If you’d like to know more about what we’d actually do together, I’ve written about what happens in your first hypnotherapy session.

What affects the price of hypnotherapy

If you’re comparing hypnotherapists, you’ll see quite a spread of prices. A few things usually explain the difference:

  • Training and experience. Someone with years of clinical practice and further training in other approaches will usually charge more than someone newly qualified.
  • Location. City centre rooms cost more to rent, and prices in London are generally higher than in Scotland.
  • Session length. Most sessions are around an hour, but some are shorter and some are longer. Check what you’re actually getting for the price.
  • Packages. Some hypnotherapists sell a fixed programme or a block of sessions up front. That can look cheaper per session, but you may end up paying for sessions you don’t need.

What hypnotherapy costs elsewhere in the UK

According to Bark’s UK price guide, most hypnotherapists charge between £50 and £100 an hour, with the average across the UK around £70 a session and the Scottish average a little lower. London prices tend to sit at the top of that range.

So a Glasgow session from £70 sits in the middle of what you’d expect to pay.

Can you get hypnotherapy on the NHS in Scotland?

For mental health, generally not. The NHS website says hypnotherapy may be offered for irritable bowel syndrome when other treatment hasn’t worked, but it isn’t routinely offered for anxiety, phobias or stress.

In Scotland it’s up to each health board to decide. In 2021 a petition to the Scottish Parliament asked for hypnotherapy to be made available on the NHS for mental health. It was closed in January 2022, after the committee heard that NHS advisers wouldn’t recommend it without stronger evidence.

That’s why most people who try hypnotherapy pay for it privately. If you want to know what the research does show, I’ve looked at it in Does Hypnotherapy Work for Anxiety? An Honest Answer.

Cheap deals and very low prices

You’ll sometimes see discount vouchers or online sessions for well under the usual price. A lower price isn’t a bad thing in itself, but it’s worth asking a few questions first. Who will you actually be working with? What training do they have? Is the session built around you, or is it the same script everyone gets?

How to check a hypnotherapist before you pay

Hypnotherapy isn’t regulated by law in the UK. Anyone can call themselves a hypnotherapist. The NHS advises choosing someone who is registered with a professional body accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) is one of these registers.

Before you book with anyone, it’s reasonable to ask:

  • What training have you done, and are you registered?
  • Have you worked with people with the same problem as me?
  • How many sessions do you usually expect?
  • What happens if it isn’t working?

For what it’s worth, I’m registered with the GHR, GHSC and CNHC, and I’m a member of the ACCPH. I’m always happy to answer any of these questions in the free consultation.

Common questions
