What Skills Will I Learn on the Hypnotherapy Training Course?

Mental Health First Aid Training

If you’re thinking about training as a hypnotherapist, you might be wondering:
“What will I actually learn on the course?”

It’s a fair question—and a really important one. Because learning how to do hypnotherapy is only part of the story.

Yes, we’ll teach you how to guide someone into a hypnotic state.
But more importantly, you’ll learn how to find the real issue behind what a client is struggling with—because most of the time, the thing they think is the problem… isn’t actually the problem.

At Piece of Mind, we train students across Scotland with one thing in mind:
Teaching you the tools, techniques, and mindset to create powerful, lasting results for real clients.

Let’s explore what that actually looks like.

🔹 First, We Teach You How to Find the Real Problem

This is where most training courses fall short.

It’s easy enough to teach someone how to guide a relaxation process.
But real hypnotherapy is about so much more than helping someone feel calm.
It’s about finding out:

  • Why they can’t sleep

  • Why they keep self-sabotaging

  • Why they’re anxious in certain situations

  • Why their brain keeps repeating the same patterns

In the Piece of Mind training course, we show you how to uncover what’s really driving a client’s behaviour or emotion.

This is what we call in training:
“The thing is never the thing.”

It means that what the client presents with—whether it’s a fear, a habit, or anxiety—is usually just a surface symptom.
The real work starts when you learn to ask the right questions, dig deeper, and challenge the beliefs sitting underneath.

🔹 Hypnosis Techniques: From Relaxation to Rewiring

Yes, of course we teach you how to hypnotise someone.
You’ll learn:

  • How to guide a client into a trance state safely

  • What language patterns to use

  • How to deliver powerful suggestions

  • How to test and deepen the trance

  • How to bring someone back feeling confident and in control

But again, it’s not just about the trance.

We teach you how to use hypnosis with purpose—not just for surface-level relaxation, but to create deep change in how the brain stores and responds to emotional triggers.

🔹 NLP Techniques: Changing the Way the Brain Thinks

You’ll also learn the foundations of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)—a set of tools designed to help people shift thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours by working with how the brain codes experience.

Some of the things we cover include:

  • Reframing stuck patterns

  • Installing new empowering beliefs

  • Breaking emotional associations

  • Anchoring confidence and calmness into the body

These skills are incredibly useful when clients are caught in unhelpful loops of overthinking, self-doubt, or fear—and they combine seamlessly with hypnotherapy.

🔹 EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique): Tapping into Emotional Relief

Another skill we teach on the course is EFT, often referred to as “tapping.”

It’s a powerful technique that blends acupressure with psychology, helping the body release emotional blocks and calm the nervous system.

Here’s how EFT fits into the therapy process:

  • You help clients process emotion as they feel it

  • You calm the body and mind in real time

  • You reduce emotional reactivity quickly and safely

  • You give clients a tool they can use outside the therapy room

EFT is one of the most practical, easy-to-use techniques you can learn—and our students consistently tell us it’s one of their favourites.

🔹 Coaching Skills: Holding Space & Guiding Clients Forward

Hypnotherapy isn’t just about what you say in trance—it’s about the whole process:

  • How you welcome someone into a session

  • How you help them set a clear intention

  • How you guide them to insights and solutions

  • How you help them take action after the session is over

That’s why we also teach you core coaching skills, including:

  • Active listening

  • Reflective questioning

  • Goal setting and accountability

  • Holding space with confidence and clarity

These skills help you build trust, keep your sessions structured, and support your clients as they move forward in their lives.

🔹 How It All Comes Together: A Seamless, Flexible Approach

One of the things that makes our hypnotherapy training in Scotland so powerful is the way we teach you to combine all of these skills in real sessions.

It’s not about learning hypnosis over here, NLP over there, and EFT somewhere else.
We show you how to integrate them, naturally and intuitively, based on what your client needs in the moment.

So by the time you finish the course, you don’t just have a script and a technique—you have a toolkit.
A flexible, powerful way to help people create real change.

🔹 The Results: What Students Say They Gain Most

Our students often tell us they gain:

  • Confidence they never thought possible

  • A deeper understanding of people and emotion

  • Tools to help others and themselves in powerful ways

  • A complete transformation in how they communicate and connect

And whether you want to build a career or just learn something life-changing, these skills are something no one can take away from you.

🔹 Is This Training Right for You?

If you’re:

✅ Curious about how people work
✅ Ready to learn something new
✅ Wanting to help others or add to your existing practice
✅ Keen to work with the mind and emotions at a deeper level

Then yes—this training is for you.

David Gowans

Training & Development

Tagline: He’s seen mental health crisis at its most acute. And he knows what actually helps.

David’s background is probably unlike anyone else you’ll meet in a mental health training room.

Twenty-three years on the frontline of emergency services first as a police officer, now as an HCPC-registered practising paramedic. He hasn’t studied stress, trauma and burnout from a distance. He’s carried them, in uniform, responding to people at the absolute worst moments of their lives. He understands the culture that makes asking for help feel like the hardest thing in the world because he’s lived inside that culture.

That frontline experience sits alongside his clinical practice as a qualified hypnotherapist and accredited EFT practitioner. David works with real people navigating real challenges every single week. What he brings to Piece of Mind Training isn’t theoretical. It’s current, grounded and built entirely from the inside out.

As part of the team, David delivers training, practises as a therapist and plays a key role in the development and direction of the organisation making sure that everything Piece of Mind produces is professionally rigorous and genuinely human.

David is responsible for development and ensures that Piece of Mind Training programmes are grounded in real-world application. Not what the textbook says should happen. What actually works when it matters.

Iona

Iona Russell

Growth & Partnerships

Tagline: She’s written the book. Literally.

Iona has spent more than twenty years working at the intersection of human potential and real-world impact — across psychology, coaching, education, broadcasting, the charitable sector and social policy, in both the UK and the USA.

She is a Master Positive Psychology Coach and twice bestselling author who has supported hundreds of people through coaching qualifications and worked alongside some of the most respected names in positive psychology and personal development. As a keynote speaker and leadership advisor, she helps organisations rethink what success and human flourishing actually look like.

But what drives Iona’s commitment to mental health work goes deeper than her professional background. She lost her brother to suicide. That experience — and everything it taught her about the gap between what people are going through and the support available to them — shapes everything she brings to Piece of Mind Training.

At Piece of Mind, Iona leads our partnerships, builds community impact and drives our growth across Scotland and beyond. She brings commercial insight, deep human understanding and a personal reason for being here that no CV can fully capture.

Ann

Ann Stewart

Head of Training

Tagline: The person who makes sure the learning delivers every time.

Ann has spent her career helping people make sense of the things that are weighing on them and finding a way forward when everything feels tough.

Her background is genuinely rare. A qualified teacher, certified hypnotherapist, coach and First Aid for Mental Health practitioner, Ann brings together an understanding of how people learn with a deep, practical knowledge of how people struggle. She still works directly with adults and young people every week supporting those experiencing anxiety, low confidence, emotional distress and the kind of quiet difficulties that don’t always have a name but make everyday life feel impossibly hard.

As a trainer, Ann knows that the best mental health training doesn’t just inform people, it changes how they see themselves and the people around them. She brings that belief into every session she delivers, whether she’s working with a room full of HR professionals or a team who’ve never talked about mental health at work before.

As a therapist, trainer, teacher and mum of three, Ann understands that most people are dealing with far more than anyone around them realises. That understanding is the foundation of everything she does.

At Piece of Mind Training, Ann leads on training quality and consistency, making sure that what we promise is what every learner experiences, every time.
