Who Can Train as a Hypnotherapist? (And Why It’s More Accessible Than You Think)

Team

One of the most common things people say to me is:
“I’d love to do your hypnotherapy training… but I’m not sure I’m qualified.”

They assume they need a psychology degree, a background in therapy, or a big list of credentials to even be considered.

Let me stop you right there.
You don’t need a fancy degree.
You don’t need years of experience.
You don’t need to be anything other than someone with a genuine desire to help people.

And the best part?
You can absolutely train as a hypnotherapist—regardless of your background.

🔹 Why Hypnotherapy Is One of the Most Powerful Skills You Can Learn

Whether you’re looking to make a career change or just want to improve your own life, hypnotherapy is one of the most powerful, life-changing skills you can learn.

It’s not just about scripts and techniques—it’s about understanding how the mind works and learning how to shift someone from stuck to free, from fear to calm, from overwhelm to clarity.

And when you learn how to do that?
You don’t just change other people’s lives. You change your own.

🔹 Who Is This Training For?

Short answer: Anyone.
Longer answer: It’s for people from all walks of life who want to learn how to create change.

Over the years, I’ve trained people from backgrounds like:
✅ Stay-at-home mums
✅ Cleaners
✅ Hairdressers and massage therapists
✅ Teachers and lecturers
✅ Nurses and healthcare assistants
✅ Yoga teachers, Reiki practitioners and energy workers
✅ Retired lawyers and professionals
✅ Entrepreneurs and people in career transition
✅ People who’ve been through their own struggles and now want to help others

Some come because they want to start a new career.
Some come because they want to add hypnotherapy to the work they already do.
Some come just to understand themselves better and grow.

Every single one of them fits.

🔹 You Don’t Need a Background in Therapy or Psychology

This is one of the biggest myths in the therapy world.

You do not need to be a therapist already.
You don’t need counselling qualifications.
You don’t need a background in mental health or a degree in psychology.

What you need is this:
🧠 A curious mind
💛 A willingness to learn
🙌 A real desire to help people

That’s it.

Everything else? I’ll teach you.

.

🔹 Hypnotherapy Training That Meets You Where You’re At

The course at Piece of Mind is designed to take you from absolute beginner to fully confident hypnotherapy practitioner.

I don’t expect you to come in knowing how to help people with trauma, anxiety, or phobias.

Instead, I teach you:

  • The structure of a hypnotherapy session

  • How to uncover the root issue driving unwanted behaviours

  • How to use powerful language techniques to guide transformation

  • How to collapse triggers and emotional blocks

  • How to use neuroscience and unconscious processing to create change that sticks

You’re not thrown into the deep end.
You’re shown exactly what to do, how to do it, and why it works.

🔹 Why Hypnotherapy Training in Scotland Matters

There are lots of hypnotherapy training options out there—but if you’re based in Scotland, location matters.

At Piece of Mind, you’ll train at our dedicated centre just outside of Glasgow, in a supportive, down-to-earth environment that feels real—not clinical.

✅ Local, in-person training
✅ Easy access from across Scotland
✅ Practical sessions with real feedback
✅ A supportive learning community that keeps going after training finishes

If you’re looking for hypnotherapy training in Scotland that combines quality, support, and accessibility—this is it.

🔹 For Career Changers AND Complementary Practitioners

There are two types of students I tend to see most:

1. People looking for a change.
They’re stuck in jobs they don’t love, or they’ve come through their own healing journey and now want to help others. They want more meaning. More purpose.

2. People already working in health and wellbeing.
Hairdressers, massage therapists, Reiki and yoga practitioners—people who are already helping others and want to go deeper. Hypnotherapy adds another powerful tool to their kit.

Whichever camp you’re in, this training gives you:

  • The tools

  • The process

  • The support

  • And the shortcut to get results with clients quickly and ethically

🔹 You’re Not Just Learning Hypnotherapy—You’re Learning a Skill That Changes Lives

What you learn in this training is so much more than “how to relax someone.”
You’ll learn how to:

  • Rewire fear

  • Collapse anxiety responses

  • Help people break lifelong patterns

  • Build your own confidence along the way

You’ll also learn how to:

  • Work ethically with clients

  • Know when to refer on

  • Structure a successful session

  • Use advanced language patterns that influence the unconscious mind

🔹 How Do You Enroll?

You can enroll directly through the website—just click on the relevant course date and follow the steps to choose your payment option. Everything from there is automated.

Or, if you’d prefer to chat first, just send me an email or give me a call—I can manually enroll you and answer any questions you have.

✅ Final Thoughts: So, Can You Train as a Hypnotherapist?

If you’ve read this far, the answer is probably yes.

You don’t need to be special.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You don’t need to be perfect.

You just need to care.
You just need to show up.
And I’ll teach you the rest.

📌 If you’re ready to make a change—whether for yourself, your future clients, or both—this training is for you.

People who’ve worked with Ian consistently say the same thing — he gets it in a way that goes beyond what most trainers can offer. He doesn’t just understand the subject. He understands people.

David

David Gowans

Training & Development

Tagline: He’s seen mental health crisis at its most acute. And he knows what actually helps.

David’s background is probably unlike anyone else you’ll meet in a mental health training room.

Twenty-three years on the frontline of emergency services first as a police officer, now as an HCPC-registered practising paramedic. He hasn’t studied stress, trauma and burnout from a distance. He’s carried them, in uniform, responding to people at the absolute worst moments of their lives. He understands the culture that makes asking for help feel like the hardest thing in the world because he’s lived inside that culture.

That frontline experience sits alongside his clinical practice as a qualified hypnotherapist and accredited EFT practitioner. David works with real people navigating real challenges every single week. What he brings to Piece of Mind Training isn’t theoretical. It’s current, grounded and built entirely from the inside out.

As part of the team, David delivers training, practises as a therapist and plays a key role in the development and direction of the organisation making sure that everything Piece of Mind produces is professionally rigorous and genuinely human.

David is responsible for development and ensures that Piece of Mind Training programmes are grounded in real-world application. Not what the textbook says should happen. What actually works when it matters.

Iona

Iona Russell

Growth & Partnerships

Tagline: She’s written the book. Literally.

Iona has spent more than twenty years working at the intersection of human potential and real-world impact — across psychology, coaching, education, broadcasting, the charitable sector and social policy, in both the UK and the USA.

She is a Master Positive Psychology Coach and twice bestselling author who has supported hundreds of people through coaching qualifications and worked alongside some of the most respected names in positive psychology and personal development. As a keynote speaker and leadership advisor, she helps organisations rethink what success and human flourishing actually look like.

But what drives Iona’s commitment to mental health work goes deeper than her professional background. She lost her brother to suicide. That experience — and everything it taught her about the gap between what people are going through and the support available to them — shapes everything she brings to Piece of Mind Training.

At Piece of Mind, Iona leads our partnerships, builds community impact and drives our growth across Scotland and beyond. She brings commercial insight, deep human understanding and a personal reason for being here that no CV can fully capture.

Ann

Ann Stewart

Head of Training

Tagline: The person who makes sure the learning delivers every time.

Ann has spent her career helping people make sense of the things that are weighing on them and finding a way forward when everything feels tough.

Her background is genuinely rare. A qualified teacher, certified hypnotherapist, coach and First Aid for Mental Health practitioner, Ann brings together an understanding of how people learn with a deep, practical knowledge of how people struggle. She still works directly with adults and young people every week supporting those experiencing anxiety, low confidence, emotional distress and the kind of quiet difficulties that don’t always have a name but make everyday life feel impossibly hard.

As a trainer, Ann knows that the best mental health training doesn’t just inform people, it changes how they see themselves and the people around them. She brings that belief into every session she delivers, whether she’s working with a room full of HR professionals or a team who’ve never talked about mental health at work before.

As a therapist, trainer, teacher and mum of three, Ann understands that most people are dealing with far more than anyone around them realises. That understanding is the foundation of everything she does.

At Piece of Mind Training, Ann leads on training quality and consistency, making sure that what we promise is what every learner experiences, every time.
